In 1987 two HIV positive women identified the need for specific support services for women affected by HIV.

Positively Women has since grown to become a national charity that offers practical and emotional support, and empowering women to make informed choices and challenging discrimination. The ethos of peer support remains at the heart of the organisation.

To mark this 20th anniversary, Positively Women has launched a special edition of its magazine.

The commemorative edition features the stories of 24 women diagnosed over the last 20 years.

The different stories show the changing attitudes and treatment of women living with HIV over the last two decades.

This magazine is an invaluable historical record of HIV in the UK as expressed in this extract:

“In some ways, looking back to early 1987, I wish I’d known then what I know now; that I would somehow survive the devastation and the loss of so many friends… For many, years did not seem like an option for us, but I guess if I’d known it all then I might not have fought the battles I fought, taken the risks I took, done the things I did and ended up with the life I have now.”
